Jewish Community of Berlin

Stamp: "Eigentum der Bibliothek der Jüdischen Gemeinde Berlin"

Since 2011, 26 books could be returned to the Jewish Community of Berlin.

The library, which at that time comprised some 55,000 volumes, had been confiscated in 1939 and handed over to the Reich Security Main Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt, RSHA).

The books belonging to the Jewish Community of Berlin were acquired by the Berlin City Library (Berliner Stadtbibliothek, BStB) in various ways. Some were found in the consignments of the Salvage Office (Bergungsstelle) after the end of the war, whilst others were purchased in 1943 by the municipal pawnshop of the City of Berlin.

The books bear provenance marks from various institutions of the Jewish Community of Berlin, such as various schools, the Jewish Reading Room and Library, and the Community Council.
