Jewish Community Frankfurt am Main

Stamp: "Hermann Cohen Bibliothek in der Bibliothek der Israelit. Gemeinde Frankfurt a.M."

In 2018, a book from the Hermann Cohen Library of the Jewish Community of Frankfurt am Main could be returned.

The book came from a depot of the Reich Security Main Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt, RSHA) at Eisenacher Str. 11–13 in Berlin-Schöneberg. The RSHA had gathered looted books from all over Europe there. After the end of the war in 1945, some of these books were distributed by the Salvage Office (Bergungsstelle) to libraries throughout Berlin.

At the request of the Jewish Community of Frankfurt, the book was handed over to the National Library of Israel in Jerusalem, which already holds approximately 3,800 volumes from Hermann Cohen’s library. The vast majority of Cohen’s philosophical library was subsequently transferred to Jerusalem in the late 1940s as part of the Jewish Cultural Reconstruction programme, to what was then the Jewish National and University Library, and is now the National Library of Israel.
