Jewish Community of Vienna

Label of the library of the Jewish Community of Vienna with a shelf mark

In 2017, a book from the library of the Jewish Community of Vienna (Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, IKG) could be returned.

The book came from a depot of the Reich Security Main Office (Reichssicherheitshauptamt, RSHA) at Eisenacher Str. 11–13 in Berlin-Schöneberg. The RSHA had gathered looted books from all over Europe there. After the end of the war in 1945, some of these books were distributed by the Salvage Office (Bergungsstelle) to libraries throughout Berlin.

The restitution was carried out in cooperation with the University Library of the Free University of Berlin and the University Library of the University of Potsdam, both of which also returned books to the Jewish Community of Vienna.
