Central Archives of German Jewry

Stamp: "Geamtarchiv der deutschen Juden", stamped over

Since 2012, six books from the stock of the library of the Central Archives of German Jewry ("Gesamarchiv der deutschen Juden") have been handed over to the Foundation New Synagogue Berlin - Centrum Judaicum, whose archive today contains the preserved files of the Central Archives.

The Central Archives of German Jewry was the first independent Jewish archival institution in Germany, founded in 1905 by the Grand Lodge of the Order B'nai B'rith together with the German-Israelite Community Federation ("Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund") in Berlin, and existed until it was taken over by the Reichssippenamt after the November pogroms in 1938.

The Berlin City Library presumably received the books after the end of the war via the Bergungsstelle, mission Nr. 8 - Library of the Reichssippenamt, where the entire stock of the archives had been transferred after the November pogroms in 1938.
