Walter (alternative spelling: Walther) Julius Hiller was born on 4 September 1889 in Berlin. His parents were the merchant Jüdel Philipp Felix Hiller (1852–1913) and Elise Hiller, née Rosenbaum, who had been born on 14 March 1866 in Berlin. Walter Hiller studied law and became a solicitor and notary. He was married to Frieda Levy, who had been born in Schönlanke on 19 October 1897. From 1932 onwards, the couple lived at Regensburger Straße 2 in Berlin-Schöneberg.

The Hiller family was persecuted as Jewish in Nazi Germany. On 1 November 1941, Walter and Frieda Hiller were deported from Berlin to the Litzmannstadt ghetto. Walter Hiller was murdered there on 14 February 1942. Frieda Hiller, née Levy, was deported to the Kulmhof extermination camp on 8 May 1942 and murdered. Walter Hiller's mother, Elise Hiller, née Rosenbaum, was first deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp on 12 August 1942 and then to the Treblinka extermination camp on 26 September 1942, where she was murdered.
