Hermann Mayer was born on 1 April 1882 in Mannheim. His parents were the lumber merchant Salomon Mayer (1843–1888) and Auguste Mayer, née Burger (1851–1918). Hermann Mayer studied medicine and became a specialist in dermatology and venereology. In 1907, he married Jeta Kagan in Berlin, who had been born on 18 March 1877 in Seda. Their son Adalbert was born in Berlin on 8 February 1909. At that time, the family lived at Kurstraße 11 in Berlin-Schlachtensee, later moving to Martin-Luther-Straße 88 in Berlin-Schöneberg. Adalbert Mayer studied law in Cologne, where he received his doctorate on 27 July 1933.

The Mayer family was persecuted as Jewish in Nazi Germany. Hermann Mayer died on 29 October 1936 in Berlin. Adalbert and Jeta Mayer subsequently fled Germany for the United States, thus surviving the Shoah. Jeta Mayer changed her first name to Harriet in the States and spent the rest of her life there until she passed away on 6 May 1959 in Chicago. Adalbert Mayer also lived in Chicago. In 1969, he married Conne Conn (1917-1999), a native of Iowa. Adalbert Mayer died in Chicago on 4 May 1992.
