Adele Hoffnung was born on 3 June 1901 in Berlin. She was the second oldest daughter of Samuel Hoffnung and Dorothea Tischler. Her sisters were Johanna (* 1900), Rosa (*1902) and Charlotte (*1907). In 1923 she married Max Gappe (*1892) and moved with him to Schweidnitz. There, Adele Gappe worked as an accountant and started an education at the local public school. Adele and Max Gappe had two daughters, Ilse (*1924) and Ruth (*1928).

Max Gappe had been arrested in 1938/39 and was temporarily interned at Buchenwald concentration camp, but was released and was then able to emigrate to Shanghai in 1939. He thus survived the Holocaust, but could not take his family with him or arrange for them to emigrate. In the meantime, Ilse and Ruth had been staying with their aunt Johanna in Maastricht. In 1941, Ruth was sent back to Berlin because she was younger than 15 years old. In the same year she was deported with her mother to the Minsk Ghetto and murdered there. Ilse Gappe was deported from Maastricht to Auschwitz in 1942 and murdered. Max Gappe emigrated to Israel in the early 1950s.
